Major General James Grant, Laird of Ballindalloch (1720-1806)

General Grant, who was born in northern Scotland at his family’s estate , was a long time professional soldier and government administrator. It has been said that he may have been the best of the British generals. For a time he was governor of the colony of Florida after it was take from the Spanish. During the Battle of Brooklyn, General Grant led the diversionary force that Lord Stirling confronted near the Red Lion Tavern. He is remembered for a famous speech on the floor of Parliament in 1772 when he said, “Give me 5000 men and I will march the flag of England across the continent.” William Alexander, Lord Stirling was there to hear him.
