This commanding height served as an observation post
for General Washington, who with his aides viewed the fighting at Green-Wood and at
the Old Stone House. Upon seeing the desperate actions of Smallwood’s Marylanders he
reportedly exclaimed, “What brave men I must this day lose!” The British leveled the
hill following the occupation of Brooklyn and New York City so that it could not again
be used by American forces. The hill was located near the intersection of Court Street
and Atlantic Avenue, and is now occupied by a retail establishment, in what was formerly
a bank. A bronze plaque on the building’s façade marks the site. It is said that the hill
was as tall at the top of the flag pole mounted on top of the building.
